All plays performed in England from 1737 to 1968 had to be approved by the Lord Chamberlain's office. Nicholas De Jongh gives a savage and often comic account of the state control between 1901 and 1968, that would censor anything that was too frank or outspoken.

Nicholas de Jongh has been Chief Theatre Critic of the London Evening Standard since 1991, and was formerly Deputy Critic and Arts Correspondent at the Guardian.
