Martin, Liverpool Preface to the second edition Oral microbiology forms an important part of the curriculum of dental students while the multidisciplinary nature of the research in this area means that studies of the adherence, metabolism and pathogenicity of oral bacteria are equally relevant to microbiologists. The success of the first edition of Oral Microbiology stems in part from the fact that the book satisfies successfully the needs of both of these groups of students as well as those of general dental practitioners, medical students and senior scientists.

Synopsis:
Since the second edition of "Oral Microbiology" was published in 1984, there has been an enormous expansion in knowledge in all areas of the subject. In particular, striking advances in the taxonomy of oral microflora have allowed closer identification of groups of organisms with health and disease. This standard text in dental schools has been completely rewritten, yet retains its ecological slant. There are new chapters on dental caries, with an emphasis on methods of prevention, on yeasts and viral infections, and on cross infection (including treating immunologically compromised patients). The chapter on periodontal diseases has been enlarged to include a discussion of bacterial aetiology and microbial virulence factors, while the chapter on bacterial infections includes mechanisms of opportunistic infection. References to further reading are available in each chapter and a glossary of microbiological and dental terms is provided at the end of the book. This book should be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students of dentistry; undergraduate students of microbiology, medical microbiology, applied biology, general microbiology; dental technicians; dental nurses; and dental hygienists.
