From Library Journal:
Here Merrill gives us poems, prose poems, and a one-act play in verse. In the play, "The Image Maker," Merrill skillfully uses magic and folk religion as a metaphor for the power of language and art, while "Prose of Departure" slips effectively from prose to haiku and back. The poems themselves are not as good, suffering from description for its own sake and wordplay that too often spoils the mood. Merrill's earlier Late Settings ( LJ 6/85) is superior. This is worth adding to poetry collections because of the play, but it is not essential Merrill. Steven Hupp, Eisenhower P.L., Harwood Heights, Ill.
