Acclaimed illustrator Peter Kuper delivers a shocking graphic interpretation of this controversial classic.
Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness has unsettled generations of readers with its haunting portrait of colonialism and the brutal exploitation of African lives. Peter Kuper's graphic adaptation reimagines this singular masterpiece for a new generation. Illustrated to evoke early twentieth-century woodcuts, Kuper's Heart of Darkness confronts Conrad s famously ambiguous, labyrinthine sentences and invents in stark black and white panels a visual language that excavates the hidden corners of Conrad's 1899 masterpiece. Capturing the ominous atmosphere and hellish conditions of the Belgian Congo, Kuper transforms this lurid tale of madness, greed and evil into something shockingly modern. Kuper interrogates the problematic legacy of Heart of Darkness by grappling with Conrad's own colonial attitudes and racist imagery which still endure today. Long-time admirers of the novel will see Conrad's opus with new eyes while new readers will discover a brilliant introduction to a classic work.

Not only a triumph of graphic art but a compelling work of literary interpretation. [Kuper] has designed a masterful synthesis that retains Conrad's language while pressing beyond the limits of Conrad's vision. --Maya Jasanoff, Coolidge Professor of History, Harvard University, from the foreword
An effective visual rendering of a notoriously ambiguous novella. --Paul Armstrong, Professor of English, Brown University
The major achievement of this adaptation is Kuper's ability to capture Conrad's irony by going beyond the merely expressionist. It provides a space of play that enhances the moral of the tale. --Simon Gikandi, Robert Schirmer Professor of English, Princeton University
Peter Kuper frequently contributes cartoons to The New Yorker and is the illustrator of Mad magazine's "Spy vs. Spy." His graphic novels include the Eisner Award-winning Ruins and Kafkaesque, an adaptation of Kafka's stories. He lives in New York City.
