This introduction to convection in porous media assumes the reader is familiar with basic fluid mechanics and heat transfer, going on to cover insulation of buildings, energy storage and recovery, geothermal reservoirs, nuclear waste disposal, chemical reactor engineering and the storage of heat-generating materials like grain and coal. Geophysical applications range from the flow of groundwater around hot intrusions to the stability of snow against avalanches. The book is intended to be used as a reference, a tutorial work or a textbook for graduates.

This book provides a user-friendly introduction to convection in porous media, such as fibrous insulation, geological strata, and catalytic reactors. The presentation is self-contained, requiring only routine classical mathematics and the basic elements of fluid mechanics and heat transfer. It will thus be of use not only to researchers and practicing engineers as a review and reference, but also to graduate students and others just entering the field.
Convection in Porous Media includes nearly 1000 new references and covers: convection in deforming porous media, "designed" porous media, the theory of deformable media, modeling viscous dissipation in hyperporous media, and more.
Adrian Bejan, professor of Mechanical Engineering at Duke University, is one of the world's preeminent energy scientists and is known for having developed the Constructal Law of design and evolution in nature. Bejan also currently holds chairs at three foreign universities: University of Evora, University of Pretoria, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Bejan has written the world's leading books on thermal sciences for graduate-level education in English, including "Advanced Engineering Thermodynamics, Convection Heat Transfer, "and "Convection in Porous Media". He has given two TED lectures.
