The Sandwich Generation
"Death Row" is about the group sociologists call the "Sandwich" generation, the hard-pressed Boomers caught in the middle of dealing with children, insecure and pressured worklives and parents who are living longer and needing much more complex care. It's also a mystery set in a child-obsessed suburb, perhaps the last book in this series. The Suburban Detective series has always balanced some disparate elements -- it's a mystery, but it's mostly an anthropological look about the much ignored suburbs, which the news media insists on portraying as boring and dull. Family life is anything but, and Kit Deleeuw is first and foremost a family saver. I hope you enjoy it and let me know what you think.
Formerly executive producer of the "CBS Morning News," as well as media critic for Rolling Stone and New York magazine, Jon Katz is now media critic at Wired. He writes regularly for other national magazines and has twice been a finalist for the National Magazine Award. The author of the novel Sign-Off as well as four earlier Suburban Detective mysteries and Virtuous Reality, a critical look at the new media, Katz lives in northern New Jersey with his wife, daughter, and two yellow Labs.
