The present book - though published posthumously - can be regarded as Immanuel Velikovsky's most important work. It relates his historical, geological and astronomical findings to mankind of today and its importance, in many of its facets, should not be underestimated.
It is one thing to know and understand what happened in the past, but quite another to realize that those remote events still influence our thoughts, sensations and behavior. This circumstance has only become evident through the exceptional - and altogether unexpected - reaction to Velikovsky's publications. In the present book, from the viewpoint of a psychotherapist, the author guides us in coming to grips with these enduring reactions.
The reach of his work goes far beyond the "Velikovsky affair" itself. After all, the suppressed trauma of humanity is still etched in our subconscious and influences us in everyday life. Thus, we are presented with a completely new and promising approach to psychology and psychotherapy which, if properly implemented also in upbringing and education, could push humanity to a new level.
Politics, too, can and should be put on a new foundation based on the facts presented here. It is in this area that the collective results of the trauma have presented themselves most manifestly over the past centuries.
And not least of all, another decisive impetus for our understanding of science is offered here. The standards and methods of modern science are based strongly on objectivity and all that which is objectifiable while eliminating categorically all that is subjective. But scientists are human too and mostly, owing to these precepts, with a strong inclination to objectivity and things that are objectifiable. This frequently results in shortcomings regarding their consciousness for the subjective aspects of life, particularly relating to their own thinking and feeling. This, however, is the basis for the fundamental questions of research - questions which might be termed as "pre-scientific" and include the following:
Which questions are to be studied?
Which questions are regarded as worthy of study in the first place?
What margins will be admitted?
Which methods are considered admissible for research?
Such questions have nothing to do with actual science (or," the act of creating knowledge") but they form the basic consensus of those involved in scientific activities and thus shape the direction and scope of the cognitive process. When, due to unconscious or undetected inner processes, a scientist excludes from scientific research certain areas of life - or broaches these only with disproportionately great restrictions, or even denies their existence or importance altogether from a scientific point of view, then science itself takes damage and its importance and credibility for society is greatly diminished. It is not without reason that for years we have been witnessing the troubling tendency of science to put itself less and less in the service of people. Indeed, society and the individual is being subordinated to and aligned with certain abstract "scientific" principles.
It can only be hoped that the new edition of this book will unleash an unfettered discussion, allowing us to leave behind the burdens and constraints that have conditioned us for far too many generations.
