NAPRA ReView Connect is therapy in and of itself...it reads like a good, wise friend sharing intimate thoughts and perspectives on life. It's a book written by someone who obviously loves his fellow beings.
Why Connections are as Essential as Vitamins
As a psychiatrist, but also as a parent, a husband, a friend, and a citizen, I feel the tremendously positive power of connections in people's lives every day. The connections we make are many: to our friends; our families; our comunities; our places of work; our teams of various types; our God or Higher Power or whatever/whomever we sense is beyond knowledge; our past history and traditions; the world of beauty; our pets; nature; the world of information and ideas; our favorite haunts and vacation places; and more. Unfortunately, many people are letting these connections weaken in their lives, as they have become too busy to keep up with them all. In this book, I call people to connect, from the heart, as a top priority in their lives. We all need each other! We now have scientific, medical evidence that these connections not only feel good, but they are good for us. Indeed, without them we die younger, get sick more easily, and do worse at work or at school.
EVERYONE can develop and strengthen their connections. But, for various reasons, more and more people are losing their connections--to their friends, their extended families, their neighborhoods, their hobbies, their spiritual selves--as they spend more and more time just trying to stay afloat in life. But, as my book points out, the best way to stay afloat, indeed the best way to live long and live happy, is to lead a strongly connected life. The book not only gives the scientific evidence to prove this is true (and the evidence is amazingly convincing!), but it offers many examples of how different people have created richly connected lives for themselves in today's busy world. I tell many the story of a town that came together after the a man murdered his wife; I tell the story of a woman who single-handedly recreated her neighborhood by setting up a block party; I tell the story of a business that based its huge success on paying attention to "the human moment," the moment when people speak to each other in person, face to face; I tell the story of a minister in a church; I tell the story of a school; I tell the story of a married couple that weathered hard times; and I tell my own story, of how connections rescued me from hard times as a kid. This book is full of true stories of connection, many dramatic, but all heartfelt. This is a personal book, filled with real people. I use my own life as an example, the lives of some of my patients, the lives of some of my friends, as well as the lives of people I have met in my travels around the United States. This is a good news book, one that can really change your life and actually make you live longer. If you connect in the 12 different areas the book describes, you will gain greater health, greater productivity, and greater satisfaction in daily life. That's not just my professional opinion; it is a proven medical fact. As the author of this book, I'd love to connect with you, the reader. Please feel free to contact me.
