In 1877 it made its appearance in the Housatonic Valley at Sheffield, and in the following years it prevailed in sev eral towns in Berkshire, Hampden and Hampshire counties, increasing in its severity until 1882; after that year it gradually decreased, and during the past year its occurrence in the western counties has not been frequent.
