The logical method of attacking the general problem of wear of metals is to attempt to separate these factors which occur in service and to study the effect of each upon the wear. The factor selected for study and reported in this paper is that of the effect of the presence or absence of oxygen in the atmosphere surrounding the wearing sur faces of metals.
