Review:
Anna Jacobs' books are deservedly popular. She is one of the best writers of Lancashire sagas around. (Historical Novels Reviews)

Catherine Cookson fans will cheer! (Peterborough Evening Telegraph)

Anna Jacobs' books have an impressive grasp of human emotions. (The Sunday Times)
From the Author:
How the book came to be written
In 1962 I was sitting on the top of a bus with my mother, on my way to Oldham to book my wedding. Out of the window I saw a little street called Salem Street. I said, 'Ooh, what a good title for a novel! I wonder what the people were like who first lived here?' I got married a few weeks later, and am still married to the same lovely guy. It took a little longer to write the book. It was the third book I tried to write - then I wrote and rewrote it several times as I learned to write. It was finally published in 1994 in the UK and Commonwealth countries, and has since been published in the United States - Reader's Digest did a condensed version and it's been translated into Dutch. I love this tale - see how you like it! But be warned, you may then have to go on to read others of my books!

It's been the best-selling of my books so far. I'd thought it'd be the first of a trilogy, but instead there are five books in the Gibson Family Saga. They're all about Annie Gibson, but they weave in the stories of her eight brothers and sisters as well.
