The story of many town gardens, tiny pocket handkerchiefs and long "cat runs", kitchen window-sills and front doorsteps. It is also the story of Deborah Kellaway. It starts in Australia where she grew up among large, flowery gardens and moves to North London where a long narrow terrace garden fell to her care and she began to learn what gardening is about. It develops into a quest for good town plants and good garden plants and dwells on design here, planting there, until at last it arrives at a garden where both are one.
