This biographical and critical study of Tennyson (which was first published in 1972) has a threefold purpose: to show what went to the making of Tennyson the man; to establish distinctly the power, subtlety and variety of his poems, along with the artistic principles and preoccupations which shaped his life's work; and to suggest the relationships between the man and the poet. To this revised edition, there has been added a further section on The Princess in its historical and political context, together with two Appendixes, on the 'Ode on the Death of the Duke of Wellington' and 'The Charge of the Light Brigade'. Small corrections and changes have been made throughout, and references and quotations have been brought into conformity with the important additions to Tennysonian scholarship since 1972.

Synopsis:
This biographical and critical study of Tennyson aims to show what went into the making of the man, exploring the power, subtlety and variety of his poems, along with the artistic principles and preoccupations which shaped his life's work. This edition includes upgraded references and quotations taking account of recent scholarship, notably Tennyson's letters which have now been published. Two appendices deal with "The Charge of the Light Brigade" and "Ode on the Death of the Duke of Wellington". The author has written a number of books including "Milton's Grand Style", "Keats and Embarrassment", "The Force of Poetry" and "T.S. Eliot and Prejudice". He has edited "The Poems of Tennyson", "The New Oxford Book of Victorian Verse", "A.E. Housman: Collected Poems and Selected Prose" and "The Tennyson Archive".
