In 1783 he went to Fort Weston (now Augusta and Hallowell) on the Kennebec River and engaged in trade. He was seven years a selectman and thirty-two years town clerk in Hallowell and Augusta. He was register of deeds seventeen years, and clerk of the district court of Maine from its organization in 1789 to 1818.
