Though he appeared in only six films, James Dean remains a cultural icon some 30 years after his death in an accident at the age of 24. His death is especially tragic because of his tremendous unrealised potential: he was posthumously nominated for two Academy Awards for his work in "East of Eden" (1955) and "Giant" (1956). But in his short career, Dean never had the opportunity to fail. Some of his colleagues thought little of his talent, and Humphrey Bogart concluded that if Dean had not died, he would never have been able to live up to his publicity.
