The Islamic revival in recent decades has generated a growth industry in books and periodical literature on contemporary Islam. This partially annotated bibliography lists available literature on the Islamic revival published in English between 1970 and 1988. Yvonne Yazbeck Haddad and her colleagues also provide background information and a special bibliography on women, Islamic banking, and Muslims in Europe and the United States. Three introductory chapters provide an overview of the field of Islamic revival studies from varying perspectives. The bibliography includes academic and primary sources, many of which have been annotated. Some pre-1970 entries are included since they are the only available sources on particular subjects. Many entries are classified according to geographical areas and subdivided by specific country when appropriate. For comparative studies of international scope, entries on activities in China, the Soviet Union, parts of Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa are included, as well as entries on Muslims in Europe and North America, and Islamic institutions in the West. This work is an important reference tool for students and scholars of Islam and the Middle East.

"The bibliography is preceded by three well-written essays discussing the literature of the Islamic revival, establishing definitions and a conceptual framework for the movement in general, and giving a 19th and 20th century history and organizational background of various Islamic fundamentalist organizations. Each essay is followed by a brief bibliography. The body of the work contains 1,225 references to books, articles, and dissertations published in English between 1970 and 1988 on the resurgence of contemporary Islam in the Middle East and throughout the world. About one third of the entries are annotated. Entries are followed by author, title, and subject indexes. The excellent subject index, providing in-depth access, may be confusing to some users because terms and names indexed are not necessarily included in the title or annotation of the item cited. The bibliography is divided between general works, which cover interpretive studies, economics, and women, and all other entries, which are arranged by geographic area. Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas are listed, as well as specific countries of the Middle East. The work focuses on academic studies and is intended for students and researchers. Serious researchers will appreciate the fact that peripheral references have been kept to a minimum. For more popular literature, the reader is referred in the introduction to general indexes and databases. A scholarly presentation of a timely topic, well-produced on alkaline paper. YVONNE YAZBECK HADDAD is Professor of Islamic History at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. She is the author of Islamic Values in the United States, men, Religion, and Social Change Contemporary Islam and the Challenge of History and The Islamic Understanding of Death and Resurrection. She has also contributed more than 30 articles to scholarly journals. JOHN OBERT VOLL is Professor of History at the University of New Hampshire. He is the author of Islam: Continuity and Change in the Modern World and the co-author, with Sarah P. Voll, of Sudan: Unity and Diversity in a Multicultural Society. JOHN L. ESPOSITO is Director of the Center for International Studies and Professor of Religious Studies at the College of the Holy Cross. He is also Adjunct Professor of Diplomacy at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tufts University.
