Lizzie turned out to be one of my very favourite heroines. Read the first chapter of the book on my web site................................if you want to get a flavour of this lively, courageous woman. She's not beautiful but she's unforgettable.
The book is set from about 1909-1918 but it does not as so many books of this period do, linger in the trenches and focus on warfare. It's Lizzie's tale and she's at home, working in a munitions factory for part of the time. In fact, I found what was happening on the home front even more interesting than the war.
It's the first book where I tried a new technique ie writing it and then cutting drastically. I think it gives better pace, and my editor considered it my 'best yet'. I'm glad she added the yet - I've got dozens of stories sitting impatiently in my head waiting to be written.
It was expensive on research books, too - though I don't mind that as I love buying books. On a trip to England my husband and I went to the Victoria and Albert museum in London, where we separated - he to look at various exhibits, me to linger in the Costume Court. After that I went to the bookshop and oops, I fell into temptation and spent over a hundred pounds on books about 20th century clothes! And gorgeous books they are too.
An Australian friend also lent me her grandfather's letters and papers from World War I, so I got the real flavour of the period. Australian history is so linked with English history.
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
