Mirek Friedman and Blanka Davidovich first met during World War II in the Dachau 3b camp. Mirek, a freedom fighter in the Czech underground, saved Blanka's life by distracting the authorities when she forgot to use her fake identity, assumed so she could leave Auschwitz. Though the men and women were not segregated, the punishment for personal contact was death. But as Blanka and Mirek's love grew, the love engendered during the war became their true oasis of hope.
