A journey to find out if the Amazons really existed.
The book is the result of years of fascination with the myths about the Amazons. I visited the steppes of the Ukraine, the Black Sea coast, the plains of Anatolia in search of clues. I found graves of Iron Age nomad women buried with arrowheads, swords and sometimes armour. I investigated the mysterious world of the Hittite priestess queens and the bisexual goddesses of the Hurrians and Assyrians. The answer to the question "did they really exist?" is fascinating - and complex. Certainly women warriors did exist in the ancient world, but so far I don't have an evidence that they lived apart from men or cut off their breasts. But there were war-dancing priestesses of Artemis, there may have been a great city in Anatolia where a powerful caste of king-making priestesses ruled. The Tuareg in Africa still have matriarchal customs. There is much more too in my book. I am hoping that other Amazon enthusiasts will follow in my footsteps and pursue some of the clues I have uncovered. I would love about what others have found out. For the next book maybe!
