The Curse of the Star of India
The Star of India is a real star sapphire, and can be found on permanent display in the Gem Room at the Museum of Natural History in New York City, where I live. It had fascinated me for years, and so when I learned that the stone had a murky 300-year-old history I thought it would be fun to wrap a novel around it. Interestingly, the gem was actually stolen from the museum in the 1960's, and was recovered in a cloak-and-dagger episode involving briefcases stuffed with jewels left at a phone booth - really the stuff of fiction! The curse was my own invention - unlike the notorious Hope Diamond, there is to my knowledge, there is no curse on the Star of India - though who knows? The only way to find out might be to steal it!
