Synopsis:
Flight attendants instruct parents to put the oxygen mask on themselves before helping their children in case of emergency. This is not selfishness or neglect. A parent who can’t breathe is of little help to a child. This same principle also applies in everyday situations. If a mother meets her needs, she will be a better mom. Elisa Morgan and Carol Kuykendall, officers in the national organization, Mother of Preschoolers (MOPS), surveyed 1,000 mothers and have published the results of that research in a new book, What Every Mom Needs. The authors outline nine basic needs of mothers—significance, identity, personal growth, intimacy, instruction, help, recreation, perspective and hope—and illustrate each with a story from real-life experiences. A discussion of why the need must be fulfilled follows, as well as practical "building blocks" for meeting it. Morgan and Kuykendall base their advice on over 20 years of experience with MOPS. Morgan started the organization in 1973, and now it involves approximately 35,000 women in 856 local groups around the country. "Just because we’ve become moms," say the authors, "doesn’t mean we’re finished being children. Or students. Or pilgrims." They hope What Every Mom Needs cultivates the playfulness, learning and searching moms should have while raising preschoolers.
