The "Companion Guide" introduces art lovers to one of the richest and most representative collections of Western European paintings in the world, including famous works by Piero della Francesca, Titian, Rembrandt, Rubens, Velaquez, Ingres, Degas and many others and works by less familiar artists. Through her commentaries on 200 of the National Gallery's finest works of art, Erika Langmuir enables the visitor and reader to trace the history of European painting from the 13th to the 20th century, to develop an eye for style, technique, imagery and genre, and to appreciate the talents of individual artists, producing paintings for different locations and patrons, in a variety of artistic and cultural contexts. Every picture is illustrated in colour and discussed in depth. Cross references provide a balance of biographical, historical, iconographical and other types of information. The "Guide" is divided into four sections, corresponding to the chronological arrangement of the Collection in four wings of the Gallery. A brief preface to each chronological section introduces the major paintings represented, explains the way in which they have been hung, warns against specific pitfalls - in the Sainsbury Wing, for example, many Early Renaissance paintings are fragments and were painted for particular locations and lighting conditions, and suggests developments and themes readers and visitors might like to trace for themselves through the Collection - evolution of landscape painting, perhaps, or of the state portrait. Within each chronological section, entries on individual paintings are arranged in alphabetical order by the artist's name.
