At the age of 59 Moshe Goshen-Gottstein, a world-renowned Israeli scholar of philology and linguistics, went into a coma following coronary by-pass surgery and remained unconscious for almost four months. Most of his doctors predicted that his vegetative state would be permanent, yet he did regain consciousness in the 15th week and eventually made an almost complete recovery. In the five years since then he has published three books, lectured at Heidelberg, Frankfurt, Harvard, Brandets, Hebrew, and Bar Ilan universities, and received the prestigious Israel Prize for Jewish Studies. He continues to lead a remarkably productive life. In this book his wife, a clinical psychologist who practices psychotherapy, uses her trained powers of insight and objectivity to record Moshe's ordeal, her reactions and those of other family members, and the details of his behavior as he gradually regained his faculties. Speculating on the miracle of his recovery, she offers advice to the relatives of other comatose patients. This book also includes a foreword by Oliver Sacks, an epilogue by Moshe himself, and an appendix by the attending cardiologist. A Hebrew version of the book was recently published in Israel to great acclaim. It is now available to English speaking audiences.
