Synopsis

Britain's countryside, together with its diverse landscape, is captured on film in this book. Rolling moorlands, snow-capped mountains and ancient woodlands represent only three aspects of Britain's heritage. Over the centuries, however, Britons like other races the world over have exploited their environment, resulting in the gradual divorce of nature from everyday life. From sheep-grazing in the Higlands to the drainage of low-lying wetlands, man's influence is visible everywhere, and as valuable habitats are eroded there is less variety in the countryside for each generation to enjoy. Six of Britain's habitats are explored - upland, mountain, lowland heath, estuary, wetland and woodland. Their history, their flora and fauna, and the dangers that threaten them are examined. They include the remote Cairngorms, a bluebell wood on the Quantocks, shelducks overwintering on the Severn Estuary, red deer, dormice, lichens and orchids, and butterflies and dragonflies.
