From the inside cover. The Twilight of Sail is a magnificent celebration in pictures of the full-rigged ocean flyers of the latter half of the nineteenth century. Over 120 black and white photographs are included, many of them never before published, to provide a vivid evocation of the atmosphere of life at sea: the splendour of ocean clippers as they sliced their way through the waves, sails billowing; the hazards and Spartan conditions of life on board; the bustling activity in the ports and docks; and the bleak fate of a grounded ship, floundering amidst the waves. This superb collection of photographs is complemented by Robin Knox-Johnston's authoritative text, which traces the demise of the sailing ships as they attempted, and ultimately failed, to compete with steam. The opening of the Panama Canal and the outbreak of the First World War dealt the final blows, and by the early twenties creeks and harbours all over the world were filled with obsolete ships that slowly rotted away or were sold to the shipbreakers.
