This praétice of borrowing authority explains the faét that Mo Tzu and Confucius, though rival philosophers, both spoke Of the ancient sage rulers, and both claimed to be their true representatives. Han Fei Tzu, living near to the Age of Confucius, queried that inasmuch as the ancient rulers could not be alive again, who could determine the truthful ness of the theories of Confucius and Mo ti 12 Chuang Tzu, too, frequently uses ancients' names to father his own theories. For the same reasons, the Nei Citing Is not the work of Huang Ti, and Cbou Kuan not the precious volume which the Duke of Chou used as his manual on public administration. Under such circumstances, the researchers should be cautious not to interpret one 's idea on the basis of false books.
