Da quest' ultimo lato, il lavoro del giovinetto, che l' arte non avea ancora domata, offriva senza dubbio maggiori speranze per l'avvenire che merito vero in presente; a ca gione di esempio, la verseggiatura non curata abbastanza, la frase a volte soverchiamente dilavata massime per poesia drammatica, un certo studio e stento troppo apparente, la sciavano poco sospettare la mirabile concisione, la con centrata energia della futura prosa Guerrazziana. E per avventura cotesti suoi difetti avvertiva, lo stesso scrittore. Invero, se toi questo dramma, alcune pochissime tra can coneine e ballatette che s' incontrano qua e la ne' suoi ro manzi, un sonetto a Giov. Battista Nicolini, dettato in gio vanissima eta, e qualche altra cosuccia, versi di Guerrazzi 'non si conoscono più. Poeta, come pochi furono e sono, nella prosa, par proprio che il magistero del verso gli torni difficile. Anche potrebb'essere che l'abbia riputato una catena e un impaccio alla sua poesia; la quale tanto e varia, e in un subito trapassa d' uno in altro afi'etto, e tratto tratto repentinamente abbisogna di colorito diverso, che, per se guirne ilpensiero passo a passo ed esprimerlo secondo con venienza e verità, sarebbe forza ogni momento mutare di metro e di ritmo e di forme, ora concitato e sonante, ora flebile e lusinghiero, ora grave e severissimo; a vicenda lirico, epico, drammatico; talché nè i lettori vi si vorreb bero avvezzare; nè, volendo, saprebbero.
