Das umfangreiche Material, welches diese Unter suchung zu bewältigen hatte, verzögerte ihre Veröffent lichung. Fortdauernd erschienen währenddem Arbeiten anderer Forscher, die es mir vergegenwärtigten, wie sehr die Fragen, deren Beantwortung ich anstrebte, an der Tagesordnung stehen. Manche Mühe hätte mir erspart bleiben können, wenn mir das Ergebniss der fremden Forschung stets rechtzeitig zu Hilfe gekommen wäre. Im Ganzen haben solche Veröffentlichungen aber meine Arbeit gefördert, mir auch wohl beruhigende Sicherheit gebracht, wo noch Zweifel bei mir fortbestanden. Bis zuletzt blieb ich bemüht, die einlaufende Litteratur in mein Manuscript aufzunehmen. Ich setzte das bis zum 3. August, dem Tage der Absendung meines Manuscriptes, fort. So hofl'e ich, dass die vorliegende Arbeit den Stand der Aufgabe, der sie gewidmet ist, treffend wiedergiebt, und dass sie ihrer seits auch zu ihrer Förderung beitragen wird.
