J'ai pensé plusieurs fois au désir que vous m'avez exprimé d'avoir une préface en français pour la publication de vos poètes provençaux, et il m'a semblé, que, sans être versé dans votre gracieux idiome, je pourrais écrire l'introduction litté raire dont vous avez besoin. J'ai fait, ily a 4 ans, un cours très développé sur la poésie française du moyen âge. On ne peut parler des trouvères sans connaître les troubadours j'ai donc étudié, dans des traductions il est vrai, tous les gra cieux chantres dela France romane, depuis Guillaume de Poitiers jusqu'au poète inconnu de la chronique des Albigeois. Je sais toutes les questions littéraires qui se rattachent à la poésie provençale, à ses destinées, à son influence sur le moyen âge. J'en ai parlé mille fois avec Fauriel; j'en parlais encore, il y a quelques semaines, avec le savant M. Leclerc, chargé de publier les derniers manuscrits de Fauriel sur la poésie provençale du XIII siècle.
