Singolari furono le condizioni, dalle quali uscì fuori. Giovanni Boccaccio era nato nel 1813 lungi dall'italia, a Parigi, figlio illegittimo del mercante fiorentino Boccaccio di Chellino e di una francese di nobile stirpe. La famiglia di suo padre, che egli stesso qualificò per plebea, era originaria di Certaldo, castello della Val d'elsa e perciò Giovanni poté, secondo il costume del tempo, chia marsi ora certaldese, ora fiorentino. Fanciullo venne a Firenze; a sei anni componeva già versi; ma poiché il padre lo destinava alla propria professione, egli andò come giovane mercante a Napoli, verosimilmente sulla fine del 1830, e vi passò gran parte della sua giovinezza.
