The book has been prepared with special reference to the wants of young readers and those possessing a limited knowledge of natural history as a science. To this end, Wherever possible, technical and scientific terms have been carefully avoided. The division into the natural orders has been ob served, but the many subdivisions have been omitted. It is to be hoped that this. Course, while impairing the book from a scientific standpoint, will yet render the text more readable, and at the same time stimulate the desire for a more thorough.
