Inhabitants of St. Kilda take their Mea fures from the Flight of thofe Fowls, when the Heavens are 'not clear, as from a fure Compafs, Experience fhewing that every Tribe of F owls bends their Courfe to their refpeétive was, though out of fight of the Ifle; this appeare ear ly in our gradual Advances; and their Motion being compared did exaétly quadrate with our. Compafs. The Inhabitants rely (0 much upon this Obfervation, that they prefer it to the furefl Compafs; but we begged leave to differ from them, though at the fame time we could not de ny their Rule to be as certain as our Compafs. While we were in this Rate, we difcovered the Me Borera, near Three Leagues North of St. Kilda, which was then about Four Leagues to the South of us; this was a joyful Sight, and gave new Vigour to.our Men, who being refrefhed with Viétuals, lowering Mail and Sail, rowed to a Miracle: While they were tugging at the Oars, we plied them with Plenty of Aqua Vita to fupport them, whofe borrowed Spirits (0 far walled their own, that upon our Arrival at Bore ra, there was fcarce one of 'them able to manage.

About the Author:
David Martin has spent nearly 40 years as a teacher, writer, and editor. He is the author of two essay collections, Little Birds with Broken Wings (WriteLife, 2012); and Facing the Blank Page (WriteLife, 2009). Martin is the editor of the quarterly literary journal, Fine Lines, a publication of and by creative writers which began in 1991. Writers of all genres have submitted work from all 50 states and 33 foreign countries. What started out as a newsletter and a journal writing project in one high school classroom is now a writing network, a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization, and a place where people of all talents may display their work.
