Begleiter und Mitarbeiter Prof. Dr. K ro m aye r s auf dessen i'm Winterhalbjahr nach Italien und Tunis unternommener Forschungsreise, zumal auf den caesarianischen Schlachtfeldern in Afrika, gemacht hatte. Damals, kurz nach Veröffentlichung meiner „geschieht-e der feldzüge'c. Julius Caesars, hatte ich erkennen müssen, welch unendlicher Unterschied für das Verständnis und für die Möglichkeit der plastischen Darstellung eines Feldzuges sich ergibt, je nachdem man das Geländes aus eigener Anschauung kennen gelernt hat oder nicht. Ein Vergleich der Darstellungen der afrikanischen Feldzüge Curios und Caesars in meiner vor erwähnten Erstlingsarbeit und im III/2. Bande von Kromayers „antiken Schlachtfeldern zeigt diesen Unterschied in aller nur wünschenswerten Drastik.
