An international, multidisciplinary group of scholars examines the thesis of George Ritzer's popular book The McDonaldization of Society. The essays analyze the premise of McDonaldization, provide richer theoretical discussions of the relationship between Ritzer's analysis and semiotics, critical theory, feminism, and postmodernism, and extend the thesis to other areas of consumer culture. Aimed at both undergraduate and graduate students, the work is designed to stand alone and need not be accompanied by Ritzer's original text. The essays fill in necessary theoretical issues as well as extend theoretical concepts. A major teaching tool in communication, sociology, and philosophy as well as in more applied areas such as hospitality management.

Iron Cage becomes a Green issue
I came across an interesting review by Victoria Bawtree in the magazine Resurgence Sept/Oct 1999. In this interesting piece she compared our book with George Ritzer's 'McDonaldization of Society'. Noting the praise his book has received in America, she went on to state: "On the other side of the Atlantic the book was received with rather less enthusiasm...As for the contributors to 'McDonaldization Revisited'-composed almost equally from scholars on either side of the Atlantic-most of them are also critical of Ritzer's book. A number of them are concerned about McDonaldized labour conditions, especially their dehumanizing effects on workers a subject treated in some depth." Victoria Bawtree concludes the lengthy review in saying: "In sum, in spite of all the attacks, at times almost violent, George Ritzer with his book 'The McDonaldization of Society', has created widespread interest(far beyond the confines of sociology)in some of the dominating tendencies of our time. If for no other reason, the book is worth reading. But don't be without McDonaldization Revisited. It provides a number of leads for further study."
