This new edition of a popular text provides an introduction to cost and management accounting for students. The text is conceptually based and allows students to develop a practical knowledge of management accounting based on sound principles. The contingency approach emphasises that the selection of management accounting techniques is conditional on management's purpose.
A running case study approach, based on a management accounting consultant, brings issues to life for students and allows for a real-life perspective on accounting. Throughout the text, examples, questions and problems allow students to practise the application of theory and techniques. This new edition includes many more questions and answers in an expanded Lecturer's Guide.
The book has been designed to be the appropriate level and length for a new-style modular first year programme in management accounting.

From the Back Cover:

Management Accounting 3e: An Introduction:

Weetman

The third edition of this revised and fully updated text continues to provide students with a clear and well-structured introduction to management accounting within a sound framework of basic principles. It covers the management accounting section of the author's Financial and Management Accounting, third edition, retaining the same page numbering, commencing at Part 6, Chapter 16, for those students not requiring Volume I on financial accounting.

The new edition retains all of the classic features that have contributed to the book’s success: clarity of expression, the focus on the accounting equation, student activities and real-life commentaries running through each chapter, and case studies for group discussion that encourage students to think about everyday experience of cost-related issues. Simulation of first-hand commentary by a management accounting consultant brings issues to life for students, providing a real-life perspective on accounting. With its wealth of examples, questions and problems, the emphasis throughout the text is on allowing students to practise the application of theory.

New to the third edition
  • Inclusion of activity-based costing, strategic management accounting, the balanced scorecard and benchmarking
  • A new chapter on management accounting aspects of business strategy, including e-business and e-commerce.
  • The approach to teaching and learning focuses on subject-specific knowledge outcomes and generic skills outcomes, with end-of-chapter self-evaluation.
  • Questions are graded to test student understanding of chapter content, as well as skills in straightforward application of knowledge, and skills of problem solving and evaluation.
Management Accounting: an Introduction is aimed at First-level undergraduates on Business Studies degrees taking introductory Management Accounting classes; First-level specialist accounting undergraduate students; Introductory core accounting for MBA and postgraduate specialist Masters students (e.g. Finance, Actuarial Studies), focusing on analysis through the accounting equation and a questioning approach to problem solving; and professional courses where accounting is introduced for the first time.

The book is accompanied by a comprehensive support package for lecturers, arranged on a chapter-by-chapter basis and comprising the following: student lecture notes on a ‘fill the gaps’ basis; matching overhead projector masters; graded questions to supplement those of chapters, including multiple-choice questions; and solutions to questions in the book.
