It may be interesting to mention here that in the pack-horse days it took three weeks to carry goods from Leeds to Liverpool at the cost of £4 108. Per ton. On the Opening of the Canal between those two cities the journey was accomplished in three days at a cost of I6/ per ton.* Both the Canals mentioned above are owned by progressive Private Companies, and have steam haulage and other arrangements which facilitate the transport of heavy goods to a considerable degree.
Of great importance to shippers is the fact that boats are loaded and unloaded direct alongside ships in dock, thus assuring the delivery of goods in undamaged condition.
