Comment se fait - il que ce corps, qui est le résultat d'une réaction analogue à celle qui se passe dans un haut fourneau, n'ait pas été plus tôt découvert? C'est que le carbure de calcium est plutôt du domaine de la Thermochimie que de celui de la Chimie proprement dite. Il appartient à une catégorie de corps les carbures métalliques, qui ne peuvent être formés qu'à des températures extrême ment élevées, lesquelles n'ont pu être obtenues que par les fours électriques.
On peut diviser les carbures métalliques, étudiés par M. Moissan, en deux grandes catégories la première, com prenant les carbures décomposables par l'eau; la seconde, les carbures non décomposables dans les mêmes conditions.
