En essayant de traduire les Principes de la Politique de M. De Holtzendorfi' nous n'avons pas seulement voulu rendre un hommage mérité a l'un des maîtres de la science juridique; nous avons espéré faire une oeuvre utile à la science elle-même et aux pays de langue française. Le sujet traité par l'éminent professeur de Munich, avec une hauteur de vues exceptionnelle, est encore, malgré son importance, des plus délicats et des moins connus. Le résumé systématique qu'il donne de la Science politique nous paraît de nature à jeter de précieuses lumières sur les problèmes com plexes qui s'y rattachent. Nous aurions peut - être, comme juriste et surtout comme Français, quelques réserves à faire sur certaines appréciations ou conclusions de l'auteur. Après réflexion, nous n'avons cru devoir les formuler ni ici, ni en note. Ce sont les Opinions de M. De Holtzendorfl' qui importent au public, et non les nôtres. Nous nous sommes appliqué, malgré les difficultés souvent très con sidérables de cette tâche, à les rendre avec une fidélité absolue. M. De Holtzendorfi', s'il nous a gracieusement demandé de lui servir d'inoerprète, n'a. Aucun besoin de nous comme répondant, et nous avons entendu effacer complètement notre personnalité devant la sienne. Simple porte-parole, nous n'avons qu'un désir; c'est qu'on ne puisse pas dire de nous: Traduttore traditore.
