ET ouvrage est le fruit de '40 ans de travail et le résultat de tout ce qui s'est fait depuis 2500 ans en as tronomie. La premiere édition parut en 1764 nous avions alors en françois trois ouvrages où l'on. U voit apprendre l'astronomie faits ar Cassini le s M. Le Monnier, et la Caille. Cepen ant je ne crus pas que le mien fût inutile parceque les progrès conti nuels de cette science me ournissoient beaucoup d'ob jets nouveaux à traiter, et que le public avoit besoin d'un livre plus étendu que ceux dont 1e viens de par ler. J'entrepris donc de rassembler en un seul corps tout ce que l'on savoit d'astronomie, sans omettre au cune des branches de cette vaste science. Me trou vant_ainsi obligé de former un nouvel ouvrage je me fis un nouveau plan, et je vais en faire l'exposition. Avant d'entreprendre la lecture d'un livre il importe d'en connoîtoe l'ordre et le systéme d'entrer dans les vues de l'auteur, et d'avoir une idée de l'importance des matieres qu'il a traitées c'est à quoi je destine cette préface.
