Review in: Priests and People, December 2000
John Baggley’s book assists Western Christians to value the tradition of iconography and its vital link with the texts of the liturgical hymns and chants from which icons originate. In doing so Baggley helps readers to return to the roots of early Christianity , before schisms and separations occurred between East and West. Perhaps the loss which Western Christians have suffered as a consequence of these schisms begins to be amended through his book ... Bagley’s book certainly helps the reader ‘walk through’ the liturgical framework within which orthodoxy is set, especially by quoting excerpts from the chants, meditative and poetical hymnody, assisting us to penetrate the intuitive mind of Eastern Christianity. So it helps Westerners deepen their understanding of Christian truths, through the illustrative theology in the icons ...Maybe it needs a short ‘starter’ on festive icons in order to whet the appetite of the immense yet concise and readable content of this book. In short, the book is such that one will want to continually re-read, ponder, explore and discover icons. Festival Icons for the Christian Year is a book not to be missed by anyone puzzled, fascinated or enthused by icons!
John Baggley is a Roman Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Birmingham, currently working in Blackbird Leys, Oxford.
