I do not now propose an examination of this point having in my work on the Principles of Obstetrics, on p. 4041 et seq, pre sented my objections both to the theory and practice of Dr. Simpson. I shall, therefore, now merely give the conclusions therein reached. The idea of Dr. Simpson that the top of the head of the child is flattened when driven down in a moderately contracted pelvis, and therefore that the transverse diameter is elongated, is hypothetical. No evidence is adduced, and it is difficult to conceive how it can be substantiated. Authors do not allude to it, and the ease with which the parietal bones over lap each other, as so constantly observed, is opposed to this assertion.
