Wenn wir ein Ereignis der römischen Geschichte nach Jahren der Stadt oder nach Jahren vor Christi Geburt datieren, so pflegen wir hierbei die varronische Ära zu Grunde zu legen. Nach einer von T. Pomponius Atticus um 46 v. Chr. Angestellten Berecho nung, welche nachher durch M. Terentius Varro Geltung erlangte und daher in der Regel auch diesem zugeschrieben wird, fand die Gründung Roms statt 3 Juli 754 bis Juni 753 v. Da der Gründungstag nach einer feststehenden Überlieferung der 21. April war, so ist das varronische Datum der 21. April 753 v. Chr. Das Jahr 1 der Stadt erstreckte sich hiernach genau genommen vom 21. April 753 bis zum 20. April 752 v. Chr.; da es also zum gröfsten Teile mit Ol. 6, 4 (juli 753 bis Juni 752) zusammenfällt, so mufs es von denjenigen, die die varronischen Jahre auf die Olympiadeuära reducieren wollen, diesem Jahre gleichgesetzt werden.
