Synopsis

Excerpt from How to Join the Circus and Gymnasium: The Celebrated Circus and Pantomime Clown

The first circus in the United States was run in 1780 by a man named Rickets. Definite information as to its or ganization is now of course unattainable, but if reproduced at this day, and put in contrast with the enormous circuses now competing for public favor, it would doubtless be con sidered a very small affair. Such as it was, however, Gen. Washington and his staff patronized its performances in Philadelphia, and it was deemed quite a high-toned'amuse ment for that city in 1780. Two or three years later a Frenchman named Boschard was associated in management with Rickets, and when the latter died the enterprising Gaul for some time had the business all to himself. His success encouraged rivals, and several circus companies Sprang up during the latter part of the last and the begin ning of the present century. It IS very doubtful, however.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book takes readers on a captivating journey through the history of the circus in America, tracing its evolution from humble beginnings to its dazzling, extravagant form. The author delves into the early days, highlighting the simple shows that entertained George Washington and the gradual rise of rival companies. The book contrasts these early circuses, with their limited acts and modest equipment, to the grand spectacles of Barnum's era. The reader will discover how the circus evolved, with the introduction of elaborate costumes, brass bands, and even the first tents, replacing the simple canvas enclosures of the past. The book also explores the changing nature of circus performance, highlighting the shift from generalists to specialists, and examines the loss of traditional acts, such as human pyramids and trampoline performances. The book offers a unique glimpse into the world of circus artistry, revealing the dedication and skill required by performers, and provides a fascinating chronicle of the circus's enduring ability to captivate audiences throughout history.
