With refpeét to the number of paffions of which the mind is fufceptible, different opinions have been held by different authors. Le Brun, a French writer 'ou painting, juilly confidering the expyeflion of the peri fions as a very.important as well as difficult branch of his art, has enumerated no fewer than twenty, of whichfithe figns may be expreffed by the pencilvon canvafs. That there are fo many different fiates of mind producing different effects which are vifible on the features and the geflures, and that thofe features and geflures ought to be diligentlyefludied by the artilt, are truths which cannot be denied but it is abfurd to confider all thefe different fiates of mind as pqfiom, fince tranquillity is one of them, which is the reverfe of paflion.
