La parenté de ces personnages avec les quatre sphinx que la Revue Archeo logique a publiés est évidente, écrit Mariette 2. C'est la même figure que les artistes ont reproduite de part et d'autre. On dira sans doute que les têtes du groupe n'ont pas été traitées avec ce sentiment de vive personnalité qui fait de la face de l'un de ces quatre sphinx un modèle accompli de sculpture, modèle certainement digne du beau temps des Osortasen. Mais tous ceux qui verront la double statue, que les fouilles de Tamis viennent de faire sortir des décom bres, admireront, dans le torse et dans ce qui reste des jambes, une habileté vraiment surprenante. Quoi qu'il en soit, rien n'est moins contestable que l'unité d'origine du groupe et des sphinx, et c'est ainsi que les investigations, poursuivies dans les ruines d'avaris (que Mariette identifie avec Tanis), nous ont rendu cinq monuments de l'art original des Pasteurs.
