Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a critical study of the fourteenth-century chronicle by Ramon Muntaner, a key literary and historical monument focused on the life and reign of King Jaime I of Aragon. By situating the chronicle within its historical and cultural context, the author sheds light on the role of language and national identity in medieval Spain. The book examines the ways in which Muntaner harnessed the vernacular Catalan language to narrate the history of the Crown of Aragon and to shape ideas of regional identity at a time when the power of the monarchy was growing. Through close analysis of the chronicle's themes, style, and historical significance, the book offers a fresh perspective on the development of Catalan national consciousness and its relationship to the broader political and cultural landscape of medieval Europe.
