Au mois de février 1898, les religieux Trinitaires Déchaussés, dernière branche subsistante d'un ordre qui eut sa grandeur, ont célébré à Rome le septième centenaire de leur fondation. Rien ne manqua à la beauté de ces fêtes imposantes cérémonies, assis tants nombreux, sermons éloquents; les Pères de la Merci, précédemment rivaux des Trinitaires, vinrent célébrer la messe aux nombreux autels de la basi lique de Saint - Chrysogone. Le chapitre de Saint Pierre choisit cette excellente occasion pour mettre fin à une très ancienne querelle. Tout était à la joie, à l'espérance; pour trois jours, on eût cru que l'or dre de la Trinité, nouveau phénix, renaissait de ses cendres.
