ER is one of the television success stories of the 1990s. This updated guide to the show offers readers an inside look at the top secret personnel files of Chicago County General.'

ER, as popular as ever after five seasons of haemorrhages, toxic reactions, cancerous tumours, lumbar punctures, amputations, multiple gunshot wounds and a damn fine selection of broken bones and broken hearts, still knocks the spots of other medical dramas, and has otherwise sane human beings (mostly women, one suspects) downing tools and spitting fire at anyone daring to interrupt their viewing of the unbelievably good-looking team of doctors and nurses who inhabit the corridors of Chicago County General.
The New ER Files has to be the only book for true ER obsessives. The first half concentrates on inside information about the divine Dr Greene, the simmering Nurse Hathaway, the crotchety Dr Benton and the often-bewildered Dr Carter et al, plus the minor but regular characters who adorn the screen. It is written in the form of confidential Personnel Files, giving details of their best and worst performances plus the far more intriguing minutiae of various personal dilemmas. The second half gives in-depth, blow-by-blow accounts of every single episode of the first four series, plus an update of the fifth series which, heartbreakingly, sees the exit of the delicious Dr Ross but introduces a new breed of young (and, of course, impossibly attractive) regulars to add a breath of fresh air to the multiple Emmy Award-winning series.
As gripping as the series itself, The New ER Files is the essential companion to an essential, multi-award winning television drama. --Susan Harrison
