If he had a little less caution and deliberation than some other men, who are consummately prudent in forming their opinions, it will not be seized upon as a pretext by this house, I trust, to degrade and dishonor one of its memberB. If these remarks are correct, it is perfectly immaterial to the present argument, how far the suspicions of Mr. Conrad, were absolutely well founded. With this principle in view, let us examine, sir, whotrare the facts on this point; they are too numerous for any thing but a very cursory survey. In relation to some of the material occurrences connected with this subject, a very unpleasant discrepancy exists between Mr. Burd Patterson and Mr. Conrad. I. feel inclined, sir,.to reconcile, as far as possible,.the differences in their: statements ol the same facts, and to attribute to treacheious memories and sensitive feelings, all the disputes that have arisen between them.. It is useless, it is unjust, to claim all honesty all perfection for the one, and to deny the least of either to the other. The character of both are represented by Mr. John Weaver, who knows' them well, to ba deservedly high. He would repose implicit confidence in the statements of both; and, between tire two, he would give no preference. Such, sir, are the characters of the two men whose variant representations are to be compared and scrutinized. It seems that, some time early in the month of January last, Mr. Patterson came to Harrisburg from Pottsville, his place of residence. After the bank bill was reported, he had several interviews with Mr. Conrad, solicited him to vote for it, and procure an appropriation of two hundred thousand dollars to the Pottsville and Danville rail road.
