The goals of this reader are twofold:

"The book offers one of the best discussions of poverty that I have seen. The voices come through loud and clear. Hearing the triumphs and tragedy make it possible for readers to see and feel how poor individuals struggle to keep their dignity and sanity. It is a book that all students interested in social problems should read. It can change your worldview. The authors clearly have a critical leaning, but they do not use the book to push their own agenda. They make an effort to present information and let the readers decide for themselves."
